Fidy Twuny

Fidy Twuny is a multidisciplinary afro-futurist project by Keith Alexander that explores life in an underwater future as a response to the current environmental crisis. This world is attuned to nature, ancestral wisdom, and embodied knowledge.

This project has been supported by Digital Black Dance Ecologies for its first live performance which included motion capture and projection. The sound design includes himself and three generations of his familial line and is an exploration of multiplicity and singularity.

“In Darkness” is a poetic excerpt from the live performance which explores what ancestors would say to their descendants at a time when they are uncertain of their contribution to the world. The graphic art is an initial provocation for this journey into the world of Fidy Twuny.

In Darkness

in darkness,

all that was, and is,

and ever will come to be is conceived.

even the very light you were told,

in it, could never be.

the great mystery of old,

is how out of darkness void could come all we know.

the truth is that darkness was never void,

if it were, that means it was empty.

Do you hear me, if it were, that means, it was empty

and baby, let me tell you, the darkness we know can never be empty, it’s full to, and over the brim.

Who are we? Who are you? Darkness.

you let fools tell you, you are devoid of light, when we are the very womb from which it is conceived. the very cradle it is contained within. the very shroud it conceals itself in.

Safety for the mystery.

like mama’s embrace, like daddy’s hands as he bounces you on his knee, like the aroma of freshly roasted darkness blended into water wafting through the floorboards of Grandpa and Grandma’s house on an early Sunday morning.

Baby let me tell you,

you were never devoid of light.

it was always in you.
